Residue Trials 101 Webinar Series

Join our Minor Use Foundation experts as they share decades of experience and insights into the successful completion of residue field trials.

These webinars will serve as an introduction to Field Residue Trials conducted with the Minor Use Foundation. This overview will cover start to finish execution of a residue trial, communicating standards, expectations, and potential pitfalls. The webinars are developed specifically for Foundation field team researchers, but will provide valuable information for any field researcher.

Stay Tuned

We’ll have details for Session 2) The Start: TS receipt and data recording (equipment & personnel logs) soon.

Webinar Series – Sessions At A Glance

Session 1) Before we Start: OECD/GLP Guidelines, the Protocol & Notebook

Date recorded: December 12, 2024 at 10:00 AM EST

  • Field Research Norms:  Efficacy versus Residue
  • Efficacy (replicate within a study)
  • Residue (replicate by location)
  • Efficacy = Primarily field & lab data generation
  • Residue = Field conduct important, but greater documentation requirement
  • Example = Specific details & times of applications & harvests versus general description
  • Example pages & reminders

Session 2) The Start: TS receipt and data recording (equipment & personnel logs)

  • Log material
  • Monitor temperatures
  • Check protocol: Correct active ingredient? Correct formulation?
  • Questions: Contact Study Director (find out soon rather than later!)
  • Log each use

Session 3) TS Application: Application types and equipment overview

  • Broadcast: material & carrier applied over/through entire plot
  • Directed: material & carrier applied to specific portion of plot
  • Note: Directed may or may not be concentrated
  • Concentrated: likely for fungicides & insecticides
  • Not concentrated: most commonly for herbicides (banded applications)

Session 4) Application Data: Calculations and Applications (specifics and details)

  • Key Components:
  • Mix: Water, test substance adjuvant = known volume (mls)
  • Output: Rate of application (mls/sec)
  • Time: Pass time applying mix to plot (seconds)
  • Area: Sprayed plot area (m2)

Session 5) The Commodity: Crop production through to Sampling, Storage & Transport of Samples

  • Log crop details
  • Log cultural practices
  • Match applications to crop stage/protocol timing
  • Commodity should be commercial, sampled at correct timing
  • Freeze & monitor samples
  • Document handling & delivery to lab

Session 6) The Deliverables: Notebook completion & Downstream review

  • Log all activity when it happens
  • Communicate with Study Director
  • Add emails to notebook (relevant)
  • Study is completed with a completed Notebook (not just samples)
  • What is the definition of a successful study?
    • Solid Study Conduct
    • Thorough Documentation
    • Samples delivered to the lab w/o contamination
    • Post Study Questions answered and resolved
